It's the night of midnight madness, the lights go down and the spotlight is on the players of the 2018-2019 University of Lynchburg Men’s Basketball team. As the team begins the new season one question remains unanswered, “how is this year’s team different from last year?”
Hillary Scott, men’s Head Coach, is now in his eleventh season as the team’s head coach. This year’s season has brought about many new records including leading the Hornets to their first ever Division 3 national ranking. The Hornets are currently ranked twenty-second in the (Old Dominion Athletic Conference) ODAC.
Scott has described how the seniors have “set the tone” for the rest of the players on the team in terms of “practice, weight lifting, workouts, and academically.” The team has multiple returning players which has helped the team continue to grow and move forward. Isräel Lockamy, a second-year Guard on the team from Raleigh, North Carolina, stated “this year it feels better chemistry wise and we seem more as a team and we play more together.”
The team’s main focus this year is defense and rebounding. Scott states that, “defense and rebounding are the two things that we haven’t been good at the last 2 years….we needed to get back to defense as that is what is going to keep us in the games.”
As a result of the team’s early season success, the team has seen an increase in media attention. However, it is not all about where the team starts as much as it is about how they finish. “It's a marathon, not a sprint,” says Coach Scott. Scott goes on to say, “ I want to be ranked at the end of the season….still stay hungry and understand that there is bigger goals, utimaltely winning the ODAC championship.” Lockamy says, “to me, 22 doesn’t mean anything without a ring..the race isn’t over we have a long way to go.” The University of Lynchburg is proud of the team and excited to see where the season takes them. Good luck and Go Hornets!
